Where I am from, school has traditionally started in September, specifically the first day after labor day. In the early days it was an Agrarian society where families worked together – especially on the farm. That often meant the first day of school didn’t come around ’till October. After the Civil War, it was less of an Agrarian society and soon emerged as an industrial giant. By the 20th century, state governments began to standardize the number of days kids would be in school and when they would begin. And of course, in most of the earlier part of the 1900s, there was no air conditioning so it was impractical to begin in August – usually the hottest month of the year. Thus, the standard day, after labor day, came into existence since temperatures began winding down around that time.
Since the 1990s August has meant a lot of kids are heading back to the classroom, although I have always started my kids in the traditional ‘day after Labor Day’ in September. Today, I have a new bundle, School Days, that can help document that journey – whether it be a first year, a last one, or anywhere in between. And since it is August first that means I have a Digital Scrapbook blog train mini freebie that coordinates with the bundle for you as well!

Thank you, Jess, for this amazing kit this month. Gorgeous x
Thank you so much Sarah C! Thanks so much for stopping by! ♥
Lovely vintage look to your mini – thanks! We used to start school the last week of August when I was a kid. The first time I heard of kids starting in early August (as an adult), I was shocked! LOL Like you said, that’s awfully hot weather. Our school definitely didn’t have A/C. Not much learning would have gotten done. Do you remember how hard it was to get used to sitting still in a desk after running free all summer?
Thank you Tricia! I was born & raised in Florida and we always started in September. I honestly don’t remember if our school had AC or not. You know the funny thing is I was a very atypical child – I couldn’t wait for summer to be over so I could go BACK to school. I loved everything about ‘back to school’. I always wanted to be a teacher when I was a little – maybe that’s why. 🙂
Thank you, Jess! Love your designs.
Many thanks Phyllis! I really appreciate you taking a moment to leave me your kind note! ♥
